Buffalo Foodies: Buddy Shula

We are excited to announce our newest Buffalo Foodie, Buddy Shula.  You may have heard his voice on that radio, he’s been doing it for almost 30 years now.  Starting with Taylor and Moore at WPHD (now known at WEDG), he’s also worked at WYRK and WNUC.  However for the last 10 years he’s been working on Star 102.5, currently his show airs on Saturday nights between 6 and 10.  We were able to get a hold of Buddy through Foodie Kev Diddy, and were able to ask him a couple questions about his favorite places to grab some food.  Here’s what he had to say….

Where are some of your favorite places to eat?

Buddy: La Castelana ( Transit Rd, Depew) The absolute best linguine and red clam sauce…total authentic…been a loyal customer for a long time!  The Old Orchard Inn, East Aurora (my take a date candlelight place) great “stick to ribs type stuff! China King, Williamsville for take out…everytime I feel like I am getting a cold, I just get the Won Ton soup and it does the trick. The Italian Village, Cheektowaga is my Friday Night place. It is a tradition with me and my dad. The Hot Peppers are great. I am a huge Sushi fan, and Wegmans Market Cafe is my place for that. In fact, there is hardly a day where I do not go to Wegmans, in my opinion, it is the best in class for everything food! I also love the Hillview Restaurant in Lancaster for a good cup of coffee and Souvlaki! It is great food, simple, and good people…and yes, inexpensive! When i want a great dinner, with Lobster, another fave of mine, it is the Buffalo Chophouse…surf and turf! I love Pizza, too! Yes, with Anchovies! Picassos in Lancaster is the best!

Where do you like to grab a drink with friends?

Buddy: Uncle Franks Restaurant in Langford is great! The owner “Bear” is just a great guy and they have Genny Light too- my fave! I also like Russells Steaks and Chops, (Russ Salvatore is a friend, and of course, he is simply amazing) what a great bar, lounge. 2 extremes, i know! The Aud sportsbar is a great place too. For the most part, I like it simple!

If you had a friend visiting from out of town, where would you take them to eat/drink/have a good time?

Buddy: Depending on who they are…my favorite drink of choice is Sapphire and Tonic. I like Russells for this, but i would also make sure to go to Charlie the Butcher for authentic Beef on Weck. Charlie is a really good friend of mine for many years! I would most likely take them to TORO for a night on the town and wine. Left Bank is great, and the PHO at Le Metro is delicious! I am a huge fan of Wyoming County. It is the #1 dairy farming county in NY, and in my opinion, farmers do not get enough credit. I would defiantly take them there, and have dinner at the Flipside on route 78!

What kind of food memories do you have from growing up in Western New York?

Buddy: Skaros Restaurant (Nick Skaro is a good friend) and the old Williamsville Inn on Main St. Williamsville. Used to go there every weekend to see Ricky Krew sing, a Buffalo favorite! The Styrkersville Pub was also amazing. Rivas Pizza (Lancaster) was a Friday night tradition in my house when i was growing up. I still miss Arthur Treachers and i was really depressed when Swiss Chalet left Buffalo!!!

Are there any restaurants/cuisines you wish Buffalo had more of?

Buddy: Conch Chowder, a Key West favorite!

We’d like to thank Buddy Shula for taking him out of his busy schedule to answer our questions.  You can check him out on the radio on Star 102.5 every Saturday night and hear his voice over work for various commercials.  On top of his real estate holding company, his mobile advertising company and living in his second home in Florida, the man is busy.  If interested you can check out Buddy’s facebook page.

I really love food and I love living in the city of Buffalo. I'm here to talk about both of those things.
