Buffalo Foodies: The Breathing Tree

I think we’ve been long overdue to have some musicians featured as some Buffalo Foodies, so hopefully for the month of November we will be featuring some great local bands and you’ll get to hear about the places they love to eat, drink and hangout.  Our first band to be featured is The Breathing Tree.  They’ve been together for about 2 years now and just opened for Mae‘s Rochester show of their Farewell tour.  For those wondering what their sound is like I suggest you check out their myspace page or view their music video for their song “398″ (I suck at those “sounds like this band!” so I’m not going to even try).  Their debut album “Let Love Grow” is being released on November 26th (Black Friday) and they’ll be playing a show to celebrate the occasion downtown at Soundlab.

I was able to get a hold of Nick William (lead singer/guitarist/piano, second in from the left) and got to ask him about some of his favorite places to grab a bite to eat and hang out around Buffalo.  Here’s what he had to say…

Official Music video for “398″ :

Where are some of your favorite places to eat in Buffalo?

Nick: As a whole, I think we agree that MERGE is our favorite place to grab a bite to eat. It’s a restaurant as well as a music venue, located downtown on Delaware. It simply harnesses the perfect atmosphere, and their menu consists of mainly vegetarian dishes. We played a sold out show there once. The staff was more than generous and knew exactly how to treat the crowd. A good restaurant is more than just good food, but good staff and good surroundings as well.

Where do you like to hang out with friends and relax?

Nick: When we’re looking to meet up with friends over coffee and talk, our destination is usually SPoT Coffee on Elmwood. Anybody native to the Buffalo area should be able to tell you why. Great food and drinks. Great fun in general.

If you had a friend visiting from out of town, where would you take them to show them a good “Buffalo” time?

Nick: If we get visitors from out of town and we’re looking for a place to eat that screams Buffalo, we look to the Pearl Street Grill. This place is just amazing, multiple levels of dining, gaming, balconies, bars. The grill doubles as a brewery so needless to say; there’s something for everyone there.

What kind of food memories do you have from growing up in Western New York?

Nick: Growing up, my parent’s we’re incredibly fond of this place called Kentucky Greg’s. It’s a small hickory southern style restaurant on the border of Depew and Cheektowaga. I never liked pulled pork sandwiches until I made my way to Kentucky Greg’s. Their southern style menu and decor makes you feel like you’re at home, in New Orleans.

What do you wish Buffalo had more of, food wise?

Nick: We love Buffalo to death. It has more to offer than people give credit. Especially in the food area. If we could, we’d only ask for more vegan friendly places.

We’d like to thank Nick for taking time out of his busy schedule to get back to use with some answers.  We recommend you go to check out The Breathing Tree this month at Soundlab, you’ll be seeing a cool band at a really cool venue.  If you can’t make it definitely check out their single “Cue the Story” that’s available as a free download now.  Also you can like them on facebook or follow them on twitter.

I really love food and I love living in the city of Buffalo. I'm here to talk about both of those things.

I think Merge is amazing. I’ve been to all of these places except Kentucky Greg’s. Looks promising though. Great article! Thanks Don and The Breathing Tree!!
