Buffalo Foodies: Kevin Sylvester

All of us here at Buffalo Eats are huge Buffalo Sabres fans and we are extremely excited to introduce our newest Buffalo Foodie, Kevin Sylvester.  Known primarily for being the Sabres studio host during MSG Broadcasts, which are before games, during intermissions and after the game has ended.  Along with being the studio host on TV he also has a blog on the Buffalo Sabres website, hosts a golf radio show on WGR550 during the summer and occasionally fills in for Rick Jeanneret as the play by play man.

We were able to get a hold of Kevin on facebook and sent him out our usual questions, here is what he had to say about his favorite places to go in Buffalo….

Where do you like to eat in Buffalo?

Kevin: So many to choose from.  I more apt to be seen eating lunch somewhere rather than dinner.  I don’t venture far from HSBC Arena, and tend to scue Italian.  Any pasta with sauce at Chef’s is a winner, and the same goes for DiTondo’s.  I’ll start lunch at Chef’s with a special mix salad, while at DiTondo’s it’s stuffed hot peppers.  I also enjoy an outing down route 5 to Mulberry’s for the stuffed peppers and lasagna.  I am proud to say I was dining there before Guy Fieri stopped by with his network camera.  My wife and I have three kids and crazy schedule with my occupation and their activities.  With the kids, we’ll go to Frog Hair in Williamsville as the putting green and golf simulators help the kids with the wait for their food.  The fish fry at Jade’s is also regular outing if I’m home on an Friday (rare).  For a night out with close friends or just the two of us, Left Bank and Chop House are can’t misses.  We also enjoy Curly’s as they usually have creative fish dishes.  We most recently dined at Russell’s in Williamsville and the filet was awesome.

Where do you like to grab a drink and relax with friends?

Kevin: If I’m grabbing a drink it’s usually after a round of golf.  That’s only because the work schedule is so jammed pack during the season that it’s hard to get out.  If I grab one after a game, it’ll be with the crew at Morrissey’s around the corner from the Arena.  With friends, we’ll hit Brennans, Frog Hair, or The Aud if there’s a good game on.  I know as I’m answering this that I’ll be leaving out somewhere, oh, and there it is, Buffalo Brew Pub.

If you had a friend visiting from out of town, where would you go to show them a good ‘Buffalo’ time?

Kevin: I have my friends in Charlotte (actual natives that I know from a two year stint there) in mind for this question.  Of course, we would start with a Sabres game!  Then head to Chippewa for some nightlife, but not stay too late as we would have to make it to the Elmwood Lounge in time for Lance Diamond.  We would grab a Jim’s Steakout for the way home.

As a Western New York native, what are some food memories you have from growing up?

Kevin: My favorite food memory is Sunday sauce at my Grandma’s in Fredonia.  She made the best meatballs in the world (added a touch of mint), and her manicotti melted in your mouth.  Her white pizza was also tremendous, and I’m glad my mom is able to carry on the recipe.

Is there anything you wish Buffalo had more of, food wise?

Kevin: Buffalo stacks up with anywhere around the NHL when it comes to food.  We have the best pizza and wings here, and that’s what my peers look for when they are here on business.  I’ll do the same in other cities, getting the Carolina barbecue in Raleigh, and a smoked meat from Dunn’s when I’m in Montreal.  However, I wouldn’t mind if we had a Potbelly Sandwich Co, and a Chick Fil A.  They’re always good bets on the road.

We’d like to thank Kevin for taking him out of his busy schedule (the man works long days during the Sabres season) to answer our questions.  Check him out on TV during Buffalo Sabres games on MSG and can read his blog posts here on the Sabres website.

I really love food and I love living in the city of Buffalo. I'm here to talk about both of those things.
