Beer Porn: Dogfish Head’s Aprihop

Today we bring you another Beer Porn from our guest author Adam Kern (owner of My Buffalo Shirts).  He’s been writing about beer for a couple weeks now, click here to see all of his previous Beer Porns….

I was pretty stoked to hear that a new Dogfish Head Seasonal brew was recently released, a spring brew to be precise. A spring brew that I was hoping would help rid some of those awful winter blues. As I noted in one of my previous reviews, I was looking forward to trying Dogfish’s Aprihop since I heard that it is commonly one of the favored brews from Dogfish Head.

I picked up a four pack of Aprihop at Consumers for $7.99. Aprihop is one of Dogfish Heads (Milton, DE) seasonal brews that is typically available from March to May. It is described as an American IPA (Indian Pale Ale) brewed with Pilsner and Crystal malts massively hopped in the continuous fashion with a 7.0% A.B.V.

On to the beer review…

The color of the beer was a slight orange-ish with a nice clarity. It did seem a bit lighter than your typical IPA. When poured, there was a very little white head but the aroma of apricot was noticeable.

On first sip you can taste the fruity notes of the apricot which balances out quite nicely with the mild bitterness of the IPA. The aftertaste leaves you on a slight piney note, fairly typical of your average IPA but not as harsh due to the fruit flavor.

First Impression is that it is a very smooth beer. It’s noticeably not as bitter as your average IPA with a very light carbonation. It a light bodied beer and a little on the sweet side.

By far this is one of the best Apricot beers I’ve had to date. It’s not to bitter and not to overpowering on the Apricot flavor. So for someone who is new to IPAs, or to someone who is looking for a smooth refreshing spring / summer beer, this is a safe bet. On the contrary for someone that is a diehard IPA fan, you may be disappointed. Overall, Aprihop is an easy drinking light IPA that’s smooth and crisp.

Disclaimer:
I do, however, want to note that some of my reviews have been rather “fruity” beers. As this may be true, my objective is to try new and different craft beers. My goal is to try to focus on New York state breweries, and occasionally other more popular craft beers like DogFish Head. By all means I am no expert on beer reviewing, but the more I read and drink the more I learn and get to share out with my readers.
