Continuing our goal of having more Buffalo Foodies from Buffalo’s music scene, today we are excited to have DJ Heat as our newest Buffalo Foodie. If you’re a downtown regular on the weekends, there’s a good chance you’ve heard DJ Heat spinning while you were getting your dance on. Whether it’s on the Chip strip at Bayou or Barcelona or in Allentown at Snooty Fox, DJ Heat makes his way around the city. You’ve also probably have heard him on 93.7 WBLK on his Friday Night show “Fire and Ice” with Mike Chaz and on Saturday Night “Mixtape” with DJ Bandana Black.
Fresh off his Artvoice Award for Buffalo’s Best Hip Hop Act, we got a hold of DJ Heat to ask him some questions about his favorite places to eat, drink and hang out in Buffalo. Here’s what he had to say….
Where some of your favorite places to eat in Buffalo?
DJ Heat: I’m all about Buffalo food, so picking one specific place is hard to do. For late nights leaving the clubs I’m all about ETS or Towne. I’m also a huge fan of Sea Bar for more than just amazing sushi…no lie, the chicken and waffles is awesome. Another casual dining favorite is the Bing “sangwich” at Bada Bing, it’s steak and a stuffed hot pepper on garlic bread- pretty much two of my favorite things on a roll.
Where do you like to grab a drink on the weekends (when you’re not working) ?
DJ Heat: Usually I am working on weekends, but on off nights or on the rare occasion I get a weekend off, I like Cole’s. It’s a good spot to grab a table with a few friends, a beer and some good bar food and just relax.
If you had a friend visiting from out of town, where would take them to show them a good “Buffalo” time?
DJ Heat: I sometimes joke that I’m a Buffalo Eats Ambassador, being a mix-show DJ for 93.7 WBLK, it’s kind of part of the job to show hospitality when artists and other DJs come to town. It just wouldn’t be right to not feed ‘em some of the best food the 716 has to offer. Usually I hit everybody that comes to town off with an order of BBQ wings from La Nova. It’s also hilarious to watch an out-of-towner try to manage a Jim’s sub.
What are some food memories you have from your childhood?
DJ Heat: I grew up in the southtowns and off Elmwood and was all about slices from La Nova and hot dogs and cheese fries from Louies on the corner of Hodge, actually, I still am. In the city, summer was all about going to Wegman’s or the Lexington Co-Op and getting a bunch of fresh stuff for the grill. I’m a self proclaimed grill master.
What do you wish Buffalo’s food scene had more of?
DJ Heat: Popeye’s. No just kidding…but seriously. Popeye’s has some seriously good bird. But seriously, more authentic, or better Mexican would be cool, and I heard Mike from Sea Bar is opening a spot, and if it’s anything like Sea Bar it should be pretty awesome.
