I had a chance to see Arctic Death at Buffablog’s Birthday Party and with only 3 guys on stage they managed to really impress me with how large their sound was. I liked their set so much that I went home and downloaded their free self titled EP. I’ve been following them on facebook ever since and have followed their updates about recording a new album. Check out their new single “Golden” and think about pre-ordering their new self titled LP (on vinyl!).
I got ahold of Arctic Death and asked them about some of their favorite places to eat and drink in the city. The band is made up of John Crook (bassist, vocals), Steven Floyd (guitarist) and Harrison Scott Crook (drummer), all of whom are local Buffalo-ians (East Aurora to be specific). See what they had to say about their favorite places to eat..
Where are some of your favorite restaurants to eat at right now?
John: My favorite restaurant in Buffalo is easily India Gate. I make it a point to eat there once a week. The food is incredible, and authentic. The service is amazing, and I can get a huge Indian beer with my food. I spend $100 every time I go. That’s probably not good.
Steven: Nothing beats breakfast food. If it’s not “2 eggs, homefries and toast”, I’m usually a sad little dude. Amy’s Place has awesome breakfast food. The jalapenos in the homefries always gets me.
Harrison: Favorite places to eat: Zetti’s, Pano’s, and Seabar. I love the buffalo chicken pizza at Zetti’s and the sushi from Seabar is da Bomb.
Where do you like to grab a drink with friends or hang out on the weekends?
John: I love hanging out at McGarrett’s because they have really reasonable drink prices and a good beer selection. I can get a draft Great Lakes and play darts. Plus it’s really close to our apartment, and Zetti’s. Win win win.
Steven: I’m only 20. I can’t wait till I’m 21 and I can have my 1st beer. (I don’t think this writer wants to write “Steven loves bars that are shitty enough to the point where they don’t ID”).
Harrison: Too young to drink but I love to hangout in Delaware Park.
If you had a friend visiting from out of town, where would you take them for a good “Buffalo time”?
John: I’d start by taking them to the Blue Monk, because to me, that’s the jewel of the city. The place is unstoppable, probably because I love beer so much. And they have duck fat French fries. Then after we got sufficiently hammered on Belgian Beer I’m sure we’d end up at the Pink, a true Buffalo destination.
Steven: As a man who lives on cigarettes and coffee, Spot Coffee is half of my existence.
Harrison: Would take someone to a Sabres game and Anchor Bar.
What are some food memories you have from growing up?
John: All of our family gatherings forever have been based around food. We hold food in pretty high regard and have always loved everything. We go out a lot; there’s not too much home cooking, but I prefer it that way. I love the restaurant experience, and getting served a really great meal prepared by someone with a lot of passion for what they do. There’s nothing better than that.
Steven: Eating scallop potatoes and boiled hotdogs as a child was like Christmas.
Harrison: My favorite restaurant as a kid was Poppyseed Restaurant, home cooking was not too special.
What types of food do you wish Buffalo had more of?
John: Ice cream! I feel like there’s not a good ice cream place anywhere. Maybe I’m just not aware of an ice cream place, but I always want ice cream when I’m walking around, and I can’t find anywhere sufficient. I’m not going to cold stone.
Steven: Buffalo needs more Ma and Pa diners. We have enough “cool, young and fresh” places to eat. If there was a homey and cheap old school diner near my house, there wouldn’t be a reason to eat anywhere else.
Harrison: I want more German restaurants.

We’d like to thank the guys for taking time out of their busy schedules to answer some questions for us. Check out their songs at their band camp page or follow them on facebook and/or twitter to keep up to date with whats going on. If you are in the downtown area on Saturday June 30th, check out their CD Release show at Mohawk Place (we’d totally be there if we weren’t going to be out of the country).

I want to know where Steven lives. I think we have enough “Ma and Pa diners” to last a lifetime!
