Sushi Guide

Generally people don’t associate Buffalo with Sushi restaurants and that’s understandable.  We are primarily known for our amazing Pizzerias, Chicken Wings (obviously) and other Fried delicacies (have you seen the deep fried taco?)  So telling a tourist (or even some of the locals) that we actually have a couple good Sushi restaurants, will often come as a shock.

While we don’t have the same selection as a major city like Los Angeles or NYC, we have some options, here are the best in Buffalo Eats opinion:

  • SEABAR
  • Location: 475 Ellicott St.  Buffalo, NY 14203
  • Phone: (716) 332 – 2928
  • Official Website: http://www.seabarsushi.com
  • Hours: Lunch (M-F) 11:30 – 2:30; Dinner (M-Sa) 4:30 – 9:30
  • Buffalo Eats Notes: Originally when head chef/owner Michael Andrzejewski closed his Williamsville location to solely focus on this downtown location, it was viewed as somewhat dangerous.  But with the recent cosmetic renovations (see above), the addition of an actual kitchen and some menu changes, they’ve really separated themselves from the other Sushi restaurants in the area.  With their unique rolls (their Beef on Weck Roll was amazing), their sushi/fish tacos and now even Chicken and Waffles (weird right?) they have a bunch of exciting menu items.  However regardless of their menu, they serve fantastic tradition sushi as well.  My first Sushi experience was at SeaBar and it might still be the best that I’ve had in Buffalo.

  • SAKURA MAPSURI
  • Location: 3719 Union Rd.  Cheektowaga, NY 14225
  • Phone: (716) 683-7310
  • Official Website: http://sakurabuffalo.com/
  • Hours: M-F 12-3 (lunch); 5-10 (dinner) Sa-Sun 2-10 (dinner)
  • Buffalo Eats Notes: Like I wrote in our Food Porn, you could very easily drive by Sakura and not even know its there.  Located in a plaza in Cheektowaga, they offer some fantastic sushi for those who live in the suburbs.  We were completely won over during Taste of Buffalo 2010 and actually went back to their tent twice during the weekend.  Their Spicy Tuna Rolls was by far the best I’ve ever tried and a simple thing like the quality of their rice wow us both. The service was very outgoing and welcoming when we walked in for our first visit.  And remember to save some room after your meal because their dessert specials are truly unique.

  • KUNI’S
  • Location: 226 Lexington Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14222
  • Phone: (716) 881-3800
  • Official Website: http://kunisbuffalo.com/
  • Hours: Tu-Th 5-10; F-Sa 5-11; Su 5-9
  • Buffalo Eats Notes: “Kuni’s is a small restaurant with a unique atmosphere on Lexington Ave.  Every time I have been to Kuni’s the food has been excellent, the drinks have been superb and the service has been fantastic and my most recent time was certainly no different.  Their menu can accommodate almost anyone’s taste buds and appetites.  The service is great, the wine is great and the food is even better.” – Adam, 4/22/10

  • WASABI
  • Locations: 752 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14222; 3701 McKinley Parkway, Blasdell, NY 14219; Ste C, 100 Plaza Drive, Williamsville, NY 14221
  • Phone: 716-887-8388 (Buffalo); 716-828-1881 (Blasdell); 716-689-5888 (Williamsville)
  • Official Website: http://www.wasabius.com/
  • Hours: varies by location, call first.  They all serve lunch and dinner.
  • Buffalo Eats Notes: With 3 locations in Buffalo, Wasabi is a big name in the Buffalo area when it comes to Sushi/Japanese cuisine.  Their newest location in Blasdell provides the Southtowns (and McKinley Mall shoppers) with a really good Sushi option for lunch or dinner.  What’s really nice is their prices on basic Sushi Rolls are pretty cheap, for about 12 dollars two people can share 3 sushi rolls (and they taste good and are well made!).  With a Southtowns, City and Northtowns location you’re really near by a good Sushi restaurant at all times.

Think we missed something? Well leave us a comment and we’ll go try out the place and if it’s worth posting, we’ll throw it on here.
